Mission Statement: “The mission of the International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) is to promote size acceptance and fight size discrimination throughout the world by means of advocacy and visible, lawful actions.
ISAA’s primary purpose is to end the most common form of size discrimination and bigotry–that against fat children and adults; ISAA will strive to defend the human rights of members affected by other forms of size discrimination as well.”
Current focus: The ongoing focus of the ISAA is education and activism. Director Allen Steadham and International Vice President Fatima Parker as well as many other members are quite vocal in the fight against size discrimination and have made a deep imprint on the size acceptance community. While not as much of a household name as NAAFA, ISAA is a certainly as much of a power broker and takes a different approach as far as reaching out to those the size acceptance movement represents. Utilizing such tools as podcasts, international physical and virtual sub-affiliate groups as well as a strong social media focus, the ISAA is by far the most accessible organization of its kind and is a true innovator in cyberspace world of size acceptance organizations.
Other notes: ISAA provided real-time relevance through its use of podcasts and blogs. Once of the most vocal issues towards the end of 2009 was the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) use of a billboard to spread the word of vegetarianism by attacking fat people with by having a cartoon picture of a fat woman in a bikini that had a tagline:“Save The Whales! Lose The Blubber. Go Vegetarian.” Although this was chastised by all the major Size/Fat Acceptance groups, ISAA through their media channels, such as the podcast and blogs, made them by far the most effective group in cyberspace on the issue. As a result of their hard work and the hard work of other groups such as NAAFA, PETA replaced the billboard with a less offensive, billboard still touting weight loss, but without any caricatures.
Other issues that ISAA has taken up include an anti-weight loss surgery point of view, opposition to travel discrimination and opposition to removal of children from obese parents or because a child is “too obese”.
