People looking for big and tall shorts have a variety of choices to make. And although the are fewer choices for those trying to find shorts in big and tall sizes, there are still many factors to consider. These factors include:

  • Cut of the shorts
  • Length of the shorts
  • Color of the shorts
  • Material of the shorts
  • Design of the shorts
  • Purpose of the shorts
  • Coordination of the shorts with other clothing
  • Use of the shorts with undergarments
  • Type of stitching used on the shorts for support
What do I need to know about sizing big and tall shorts?
Finding the right size of big and tall shorts (or any big and tall clothing) can be daunting. Sizing actually comes in several methods and can vary widely by manufacturer. In general, sizing is ascribed by the following methods:
  • Numeric-these would be standard waist sizing for a woman would be considered her “dress size” or for a man would be the actual measurement in inches of his waist. The inseam or length may also be given in inches and is an important consideration.
  • Letter size (big)-These are sizes that would have the designation XL, XXL (2XL), 3XL, etc. Once again, these desigantionsThese sizes can wary widely. The more X’s that are used, the more of a difference can be found between different manufacturers.
  • Letter size (tall)-With shorts, this may not seem to matter as much, but for taller people, a longer inseam on the shorts versus a standard “big” size can give added comfort. But, for tall people sizes are expressed as XT, XXT (2XT), 3XT, etc.
  • Letter size (big and tall). Another method that is used less often, but is still a standard of sorts is the combination of the “L” and “T” to designate that it is for a person who is both big and tall. These are expressed as XLT. 2XLT, 3XLT, etc.
Where can I find big and tall shorts?
Big and tall shorts can be found in a variety of places. If you are searching for sizes that are below a 3XL or 3XT, then you can find these sizes at most retail outlets. However, it should be noted that the bigger and/or taller the size, the fewer the choices become.
Specialty stores that feature big and tall clothing are the next option. There are a few major retail chains that are specifically catered to big and tall men and women. However, they too seem to have a cut off; this is usually between 6XL/6XT. The next choice is specialty shops owned by independent owners. These are the shops that can carry up to 12XL/XT. Sometimes, these places have special agreements to get larger sizes as well. But, these are generally located in large cities and you may have to travel a long distance to get there.
The best viable option to find big and tall shorts is the internet. Web presence has become and important tool for even independent shops. They also generally provide a vide variety of sizing tools, generous return policies and toll free phone numbers to ask questions about the products.
What styles can I choose from?
Unfortunately, styles of shorts can be limited by how big or tall you are. But that is not to say that all hope is lost. But, in general the industry has these common styles:
  • Baggy shorts-Knee length shorts with lots of room inside the shorts
  • Bermuda shorts- Formal knee length shorts that have a fly and pockets as well as belt loops.
  • Board shorts or Jams-These generally are cut below the knee and can be used as both a casual short and bathing suit.
  • Cargo shorts-these are utility shorts that are famous for having a large amount of pockets and for color, coming mostly in khaki, military green or brown.
  • Cullottes-Women’s shorts that are flailed out like a skirt, but do have legs holes, thus making them shorts.
  • Cut-offs-Traditionally these were long pants that someone took a pair of scissors to that they turned into shorts. However, in recent years, manufacturers design them this way. A cut (for women’s shorts/pants) that is made closer to the seat of the pants are commonly referred to as Daisy Dukes.
  • Bike Shorts-More common for women, these are tight, form fitting shorts that are designed to prevent chaffing during athletic activity.
  • Gym shorts-Although less common now, these are still available. These are high cut shorts that are traditionally worn during exercise or working out. These shorts either come with an elastic waist band, draw string or both.
  • Hot pants-generally worn by females, these are tight, high cut shorts that are worn to specifically accentuate the buttocks.
  • Skorts-These are shorts that have a piece of fabric sewn across the front to give the impression of the person wearing them to have a skirt on. However, the back reveals a split leg as with shorts or pants.
  • Zip Off Shorts/Zip Off Pants-Long pants that detach at or under the knee to change long pants to shorts.
There are also a variety of shorts that are undergarments which we will address in another topic.
What are some features I should look for in shorts?
One of the first features is durability. A reality with all big and tall clothing is that they are generally much more expensive than those of smaller sizes. Strong fabrics such as denim, polyester, and cotton are preferred. The stitching should be particularly looked at. Single stitching will have more of a chance of tearing or ripping than a double stitch. Also the cut of the seat is important. As no one has the same derriere, room in the seat may be needed. Along with this, another feature to check is the leg room. Thighs in some shorts can be bigger than others, and unless the design and material is meant to hug the leg, it would be best to make sure that you have plenty of room.

What are some less traditional options or what if my body shape doesn’t conform to standard sizes?
For those that have needs that are not met by traditional means, for example, are too large or too tall for size available in specialty stores, there are other options. The first is to design and sew your own shorts. However, this can be time consuming and may have a bit of a learning curve if you have not made clothing before. You may also have to create your own custom templates as larger or taller ones may not be available. But, this could prove a lot less expensive and allow for you to have stronger stitching creating better support.

The other option is going to a custom tailor. Tailors will measure you and design according to your specifications. They will also have you come in for fittings to make sure they are on the right path when creating your clothes. This, however is the most expensive method to have clothing designed, but is the most effective for comfort and professional fit.
